Durational variation of vowels as produced by Arab students

چکیده

The primary objective of this study was to investigate the degree of influence of Arabic vowel duration in 'emphatic' and 'non-emphatic' contexts on the production of English sequences. The specific questions asked were the following: (i) What is the average Arabic vowel duration in 'emphatic' and 'non-emphatic contexts ? (ii) Is vowel durational variation a function of the complex features of 'emphasis'? Judging by the spectrographic evidence obtained, it has been established that duration of Arabic vowels as well as of syllables vary according to the complex features of 'emphasis', whose domain is more than one segment in length. Such features are carried over to English.

Acoustic phonetic properties of mid vowels in New Caledonian French

This paper investigates production of the mid vowels /e, ɛ, ø, œ, o, ɔ/ by four speakers of New Caledonian French (NCF). Formant and durational properties of these vowels are examined with respect to the type of syllable in which they occur. Results point to general adherence to the loi de position in NCF, such that the close-mid vowels occur in open syllables and the open-mid vowels occur in c...

Durational and spectral differences in American English vowels: dialect variation within and across regions.

Spectral differences among varieties of American English have been widely studied, typically recognizing three major regionally diagnostic vowel shift patterns [Labov, Ash, and Boberg (2006). Inter-language vowel perception and production by Korean and Japanese listeners

This paper investigates the influence of phonological learning upon the perception of non-native vowels. Four groups of Korean and Japanese English learners, at two levels of English experience, and a group of older monolingual Korean listeners were assessed on the perception and production of Australian English monophthongal front vowels: /i: w e æ a:/. Korean is of interest, because of a rece...

Enhanced contrast for vowels in utterance focus: a cross-language study.

The present study examined several potential distinctiveness-enhancing correlates of vowels produced in utterance focus by talkers of American English, French, and German. These correlates included possible increases in vowel space size, in formant movement within individual vowels, and in duration variance among vowels. Each language group enhanced the distinctiveness of vowels in [+focus] con...

Quantity vs Durational Enhancement of Tone in the Maastricht Vowel System

Duration measurements of long and short high vowels in the Limburgish dialect of Maastricht show that these vowels have a relatively contextfree durational difference compared to the durational difference found between members of tonal minimal pairs in the dialect. The latter have a substantial duration difference in intonation-phrase final position, but a much reduced difference in phrase-inte...
